In 2019, EMALTE (Australia) and Scott Technical Instruments (Scottech NZ) installed 3 tsunami warning systems for Timaru District Council.
Situated in a beautiful region of New Zealand, the Timaru district nestles on the eastern Pacific coast of the South Island. A home to approximately 9,000 people, Timaru boasts diverse geography including 2 large harbours, picturesque bays and rolling hills. Earthquakes however, are a very real hazard since the district lies on several fault lines. The risk of an earthquake and a consequent tsunami necessitate continued strategic emergency planning by the Timaru District Council.
As a result of the successful Timaru Tsunami Warning system Stage 1 project, EMALTE and Scottech installed another 3 systems in 2021 and a further 6 systems are to be installed in 2023, including the upgrading of existing infrastructure.
EMALTE and their partner company Scottech are also suppliers of the world-renowned Whelen (USA) emergency equipment. Rigorously tested for all extreme weather conditions, the Whelen WPS2900 series warning stations have been installed in the Timaru district, stretching from Rangitata Huts in the North to Pareora in the South (see map below). The system is live-tested monthly and includes both siren tones and voice announcements.
